Our research in mechanical engineering covers the entire product life cycle.

Our research in mechanical engineering covers the entire product life cycle – from design and development to analysis, simulation, and production, all the way to commissioning innovative products and processes. Our expertise ranges from 3D printing and polymer chemistry to fibre-reinforced technologies, thermal and fluid engineering, mechanical design, and computational engineering.

Research focus areas

Projects

Selected projects

In application-oriented research projects, we work together to develop concrete solutions to real-world challenges – efficiently, collaboratively, and with direct added value for your company. Start your next innovation or development project with us.

Casting simulation and experimental validation of active air cooling of cast parts

Large cast parts for gas or steam turbines or engines need days or even weeks to solidify and cool down.

Optimisation of sonic toothbrushes to reduce oral biofilm through shear forces (STOP Biofilm)

The effect of a sonic toothbrush on the cleaning of interdental spaces was investigated and the shear stress during cleaning in the tooth gap was optimized.

Institutes

Institute of Polymer Engineering

We create sustainable, plastic-based product and processes innovations with a focus on high-performance polymers and composites.

Institute of Polymer Nanotechnology

Customized functional surfaces for innovative plastic products

Institute of Product and Production Engineering

We focus on the development of products and manufacturing processes, and apply cutting-edge technologies.

Institute of Thermal and Fluid Engineering

We are committed to a sustainable, energy-efficient and innovative industrial future. With our expertise in thermal and fluid engineering, we support companies in the analysis and optimisation of fluid mechanical and thermal processes, measurement methods, and prototype development.
