Responsible conduct is based on the recognition of principles and standards. The FHNW assumes responsibility by recognising these and consistently enforcing them.
The FHNW University of Applied Sciences and Arts Northwestern Switzerland is committed to a culture of openness and transparency; research outputs funded by public money are made publicly available at regional, national and global levels, thereby ensuring they are accessible, usable and reusable.
The following documents (in German) lay out the general principles and provide further information:

Research evaluation
Furthermore, the FHNW is committed to fair and transparent research evaluation. As a signatory to the San Francisco Declaration on Research Assessment (DORA) and the Coalition for Advancing Research Assessment (CoARA), the FHNW is committed to further developing the evaluation of research, researchers and research institutions, thereby recognising the diversity of research activities, practices and outcomes. Further information on this can be found in the section ‘Guidelines for the Evaluation of Research Performance’ under ‘Personalentwicklung (in German)’ and in the FHNW’s CoARA Action Plan.
Ethics
Where relevant, expert opinions are always sought from the Ethics Commission for North-Western and Central Switzerland (Ethikkommission Nordwest- und Zentralschweiz, EKNZ) for the ethical assessment and approval of research projects. For research projects that do not fall within the remit of the EKNZ, the universities of the FHNW have their own ethics committees to assess the ethical acceptability of research involving human subjects. Research data and findings are also always assessed for the risk of dual-use misuse and potential espionage risks, in order to fulfil the associated legal and ethical responsibilities.
Data protection
In our research, we always process personal data in accordance with the relevant legal provisions. At FHNW level, the Knowledge Security Officers and the FHNW Data Protection Officer are responsible for ensuring that knowledge security and data protection are implemented. They advise the data controllers at the FHNW schools as required.
