FHNW is part of the European University Alliance ChallengeEU: A European university alliance that is breaking new ground in teaching, research and mobility. The alliance connects FHNW with eight partner universities across Europe, strengthening its position in strategic future fields.
About ChallengeEU

ChallengeEU is an alliance of nine European universities. The alliance aims to equip students with the skills needed to develop innovative solutions to societal challenges through practice-oriented teaching. The alliance focuses on three future-oriented topics:
- Sustainable Futures
- Health & Well-Being
- Smart Digitalisation
These topics coincide with the priorities of the FHNW Strategy 2035 and are addressed in an interdisciplinary manner in all areas, from teaching to research.

ChallengeEU connects nine universities and over 90 industry partners
Like FHNW, all ChallengeEU partner universities are practice-oriented, regionally anchored and internationally oriented. This is also reflected in the more than 90 industry partners from business, society, education, culture and administration involved in the alliance, 13 of which are from north-western Switzerland.

ChallengeEU: Impulses for teaching, research and mobility at FHNW
For students
- Innovative, collaborative teaching formats that focus on solving real-world problems
- Opportunities to develop intercultural skills, e.g. through participation in Blended Intensive Programmes (BIP), international summer schools and other mobility formats
For lecturers
- Networking and exchange in the European Higher Education Area
- Implementation of international teaching formats within the framework of ChallengeEU
- Participation in staff training, e.g. on university teaching and international topics
For researchers
- Access to new cooperation partners in Europe (e.g. for forming consortia)
- Thematic networking in strategic future fields
Pursue research projects with ChallengeEU
NGOs, businesses, public authorities, interest groups, external researchers and the general public are invited to pursue their research project together with the FHNW, ChallengeEU and the connected European universities.

ChallengeEU is a European University Alliance funded by the European Commission from 2025 to 2028 as part of the flagship European Universities Initiative, a key component of the European strategy for higher education. As the Swiss partner in ChallengeEU, FHNW is funded by Movetia under the Swiss European Mobility Programme (SEMP).
