Visual Communication

Visual communication is a tool of knowledge generation in its own right. Visualizations make things perceptible, imaginable and graspable.

Digitalization and the concurrent growth of extensive and widely ramified communication networks have increased the volume of data, signals and images we are confronted with each day significantly. From photography to typography, from drawings to diagrams, from the interface to coded pictograms: our perception of reality is increasingly defined by visual messages.

This requires a high sensitivity of and a critical approach to visual messages and their communication objectives. Here Visual Communication has an important role to play since it teaches us how to handle images, pictographs, ideographs and the processing of visual information in a responsible manner.

In their training for a Bachelor of Arts (BA), Master of Arts (MA), Master of Advanced Studies (MAS) and in the research-based Third Cycle of the Institute of Visual Communication at FHNW Academy of Art and Design, students acquire the necessary practical, theoretical and analytical skills required for an international and transdisciplinary professional field that is becoming evermore significant.
