Medical computer sciences are at the heart of the digitalisation of the healthcare industry. Methods and technologies from computer sciences can be used to connect medical devices to clinical information systems or to process diagnostic images, for example. These technologies also give patients greater independence and help simplify processes in a clinic, as well as laying the foundations for fact-based decisions when planning hospitals.

Current research topics in medical computer sciences include electronic patient records, precision medicine and health apps, which all aim to improve the quality of the healthcare industry but must take account of demographic change, cost pressures and the need to protect patients’ privacy.
