Development of a Nitinol-based Novel Corneal Implantable Device

Keratoconus is a progressive corneal ectasia resulting from localized thinning of the corneal tissue, leading to a cone-shaped protrusion of the cornea, which reduces visual acuity and affects quality of life. Current treatment options are limited and vary depending on the severity and progression of the disease. The GROSSO® implant (Recornea srl) is the first-ever Nitinol corneal implant aiming at reshaping the whole cornea by virtue of a dome-shaped design. Two potentially critical scenarios were investigated experimentally and numerically to determine the forces involved and the risk of inducing permanent deformations in the device.
